Sarge & Mannys Excellent Yucatan Fishing

Havent been posting in the last couple of months because no new info .We have had one norte (storm) after another in the last 2 1/2 months.No big storms just big enough that you dont want to go 2 miles out in the ocean with them.
Alot of the local fishermen or hurting because of no fishing,some hire out to big commercial fishing boats that go out for 20 days or longer.
A friend has a small Restaurant here TACO MAYAS which he serves fish tacos and fish and chips and he couldnt find any fish a couple of weeks ago because the fishermen are not fishing.
Now the weather is getting nicer,i have a trip planned for tuesday and wendsday so check back for a report and pics if we do good.

Heres a photo of a boat rigged for pulpo(octopus),they use 2 out riggers made of bamboo with heavy line tied in a couple of place from one pole to the other.Then from those lines they tie drift lines with a heavy tube shaped weight tied to it to keep it on the bottom.At the end of the line they usually tie a crab or sometimes a fish head to the end.

With this system they use no hook because when the octopus grabs it he wont turn it loose and your able to haul him in.They then just drift fish draging these baits across the bottom.

We have also watch several people poking around rocks with poles catching octopus,they grab hold of the pole and the people would have to peal them off the pole.

I have been talking with some of the local fishermen here in Chelem and they are reporting that the Octopus fishing has really been bad for them.
Its ashame because these guys really depend on the income from octopus here.They are blaming the bad season on the red tide we had here last year.
I hope they can fill in there income with other catches such as fish and squid. Some are gearing up to go out at nite for squid fishing,I hope that turns out excellent for them.
I will get some pics on how they rig there boats for octopus and squid fishing and try to explain the way they fish for them.

Heres a grouper caught by Chuck and Jack Ward on a fishing trip last week.Chuck is from Texas and Jack is formly from Texas but now lives here in Chelem. Not sure who caught the fish but Chuck is holding it,you will have to talk to Jack and get the full story. Good going you guys.

We dont do any big game fishing as of yet but the fishing we do is alot of fun and we usually have good catches .
We catch alot of grouper,spanish mackeral,grunts,snapper and various other fish.its not uncommon to catch groupers in the 5 to 8 pound range and a few bigger than that.Most of what you will catch is in the 2 to 3 pound range.
Equipment is regular fishing rods with a good strength line in the 15 lb to 25 lb test range in case you hang a big grouper.Also you should use a a good leader like a 30 lb or 40 lb test or a steel leader because these fish have teeth and cut the line easy. The octpus will bite your line and cut the hook off without you even feeling it.
The baits we use is mostly cut bait which is mullet found readily from local fisherman that sell bait.

Manny lives in Houston right now with his wife and daughter but will be moving to Chelem shortly, he is originally from Trinadad .Him and his wife Jeanine own the Hotel Las Garza in Chelem.Manny does alot of fishing in the Houston area and will be submitting pics from there also.
Sarge is from northern Indiana but lives in Chelem with his wife Star full time now.

Heres some pics of the fishing trip we made on Friday 8/28/09,we had a good day fishing and we lost a couple of monster groupers.need to upgrade our line and equipment. Forrest,Jack and I had a good day fishing.Forrest is from Fla.and hes only been here 2 weeks and Jack is from Texas and has been here almost a year.

The most import thing for salt water fisher to remember is that salt water can destroy your rods and tackle.
In order to delay this it is important to rinse your rods and tackle with fresh clean water at the end of each trip.
I have found that finger nail polish painted on all the metal surfaces such as eyes and such help retard the rust and then keeping the the metal parts sprayed down with wd 40 also helps alot.
Fishing equipment is exspensive and these little tips will help you keep your rods in good shape.
